The Power Of A Cover - Hulk 181

''Hulk 180 is Wolverine's 1st full appearance''

''No no no 181 is his 1st Full appearance 180 is his 1st Cameo''

We've all heard and possibly had these discussions before.

181 is a much better cover though.

  • Colours pop more
  • vibrant red really helps
  • can't deny Hulk and Wolverine vs Hulk and Wendigo looks better etc etc

If 180 had the 181 cover and vice versa how many conversations would we have had about his first true appearance? Or would people have been content for 1st Full appearance as 180? Especially as in 180 he has dialogue, full body image etc. 180 appearance shown below.

For me if 180 had 181's cover this conversation would never have gotten as big as it has over the years.

The cover of Hulk #181 is vastly more famous and influential than that of Hulk #180. Collectors and casual fans alike associate Wolverine’s debut with #181 because of the dynamic and memorable cover design. In contrast, #180’s cover, while well-executed, lacks Wolverine’s presence and therefore doesn’t carry the same iconic weight.

Hulk #180 is overshadowed by #181 due to Wolverine’s minimal presence and lack of emphasis on the cover. However, collectors prize it for its significance as Wolverine’s technical first appearance.
For me Hulk #181 will always be “that” iconic comic I do think it brings a fascinating talking point and is a hot topic within the community, just like another contested cameo/1st appearance and that being Gambit who made his cameo in uncanny x-men annual #14 and his first appearance in uncanny x-men #266, although for me there’s no argument to be made with this comparison as the cover of #266 by Andy Kubert is iconic, with the same being said for hulk #181.

Then you get Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen 134 where you get Darkseid's face on a television screen (pictured below). This comic out paces Forever People 1 where its his 1st Full Appearance. Some would even argue Jimmy Olsen 135 is his first full

Olsen 134 better cover (imo) which perhaps helped it become more valuable??

an act of arriving or becoming visible.

"the sudden appearance of her daughter startled her"

By definition. 1st "appearance" with you on this one.

Also ASM 315 is the first venom cover. Y'all can bite me.

If the covers were flipped then there is little doubt that # 180 would be the money book. The addition of being featured prominently on the cover would almost certainly boost it from being thought of as a cameo to being THE 1st appearance.

When it c9mic t9 the cameo vs full appearance game, there are few rules that are sacred as most of them have occasions where they will go one way in one case and the other way in another case. There is only one rule that is sacrosanct and that is that the comic community will decide which appearances are cameo or full and they will vote with their money.
