Chasing Glory Days Through Nostalgia: Are We Really Reliving the Magic

#BringBackThe90's

Been talking to a buddy of mine quite a lot about this lately.

It feels like more and more of us are on this mission to recapture the magic of the past with nostalgic collectibles. Whether it’s comics, action figures, or old-school video games, there's just something about holding onto a piece of our childhood that gets us excited. But here’s the thing—is it really as great now as it was back then?

I can’t help but wonder, is it because we were kids when all this stuff felt new and special? Or is there more to it? Maybe it’s because today we have so much—endless distractions, constant notifications, and pretty much everything available all the time. Could it be that our brains just can’t get that same buzz anymore? Back before the internet boom, when things weren’t as easily accessible, finding something rare felt like this huge win. Now, it seems like you can get whatever you want with a few clicks, and it’s just not as exciting.

When we were younger, everything felt like a big deal—discovering a new collectible or finding that rare item was such a rush. But today, with everything at our fingertips, it’s like that magic just isn’t there anymore. It’s almost like we’re trying to relive a moment that doesn’t quite exist in the same way.

Times were simpler and slower

Mr Blooby 🤣🤣 I think nostalgia does play a lot into people collecting but like you said is the stuff from the past better. I can only really talk about comics as that's my ting

Think sometimes it's better sometimes not so much. I read some classic stuff from the past and half way throu I think this not as good as when I was a kid, then other stuff because I'm a adult child now 🤣 is so much better than 1st time around

As an example I read an old Claremont X-Men annual the other day and it was super reread then I read 5 issues of the Zeb Wells ASM in the same time it took me to read the X-Men annual and felt cheated as just wasn't the best of reads and obv the expense was 5 times more

So think its swings and roundabouts but I definitely get more excited buying something from my childhood than I do something modern

Recently I have definitely been seeking out more nostalgia based comic books, titles like masters of the universe and M.A.S.K, I’m not fussed on the grades or even if there graded, just to have them in my collection is great, and brings me a little bit of happiness.

Yeah the cut out masks were a nice touch too. Can you imagine a kid getting as excited by that today though lol
