When it comes to superheroes on the big screen, fans are always divided, should they be 100% comic accurate, or is creative freedom more important? Some films nail it, bringing our favourite heroes to life exactly as they were on the page. Think Christopher Reeve’s Superman, Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man, or Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine in Deadpool 3 all feel like they’ve stepped straight out of the comic books. But then there are the adaptations that take liberties, changing costumes, personalities, or even entire storylines. Sometimes it works (looking at you, Iron Man 1), and sometimes….well, let’s not talk about Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Should films stick as closely as possible to the comics, or is a fresh take sometimes better? Drop your thoughts below! The movie that absolutely smashed it out the park for me was Frank Millers Sin City, I could watch the first movie over and over again. Haven't seen it in a while but I loved it...very original in its visual concept, keeping true to how the artist intended it to be on the big screen. I don’t feel the need for movies to be 100% comic accurate all of the time though I prefer that they don’t deviate too far, sometimes comic book concepts need to be adapted to fit movies but changing things that work without a good reason bugs me. The X Men movies embody the changing of a lot of elements to make the movies work, sometimes they succeeded in making good adaptations and sometimes they completely failed. To be fair, they were leading the way before the MCU came along and had to go with what they thought the audiences would be willing to accept at that time. They owed a lot to some very good actors who helped to sell the concepts, nothing could salvage X Men 3, The Last Stand though. I'm not overly concerned about comic accuracy. Sometimes as mentioned it's absolutely essential to change something. Can you imagine comic accurate Deep in the boys? The colour splash, to highlight blood or contrasts of characters was amazing.
Also the casting was on point, the soundtrack all made that movie in my humble opinion, one of the best!
